I learned recently from the Chicago Tribune’s website that one of our vehicles was identified as having been three times “tagged” by red light cameras which we now believe were due to the flagrant misuse of the cameras or manipulation of the amber light timing – or both.
These tickets were paid in full by dear husband and myself in spite of feeling certain we had NOT, in fact, run the red lights, but due to believing the cameras could not possibly be wrong, and because we knew our positions as Chicago Police Officers could be jeopardized by failing to pay promptly.
In addition, there were two other citations, at Addison and Kedzie, where he was making a right turn on red – we received citations in the mail even though he had stopped. We think this intersection’s cameras should ALSO be forced to pass muster considering the circumstances.
A ticket we paid which did not show up was issued to my station wagon when he was coming home late from work and had to take evasive action to avoid a careless cyclist. Of course the bicycle doesn’t show up.
Will these be reviewed? Will we be made whole financially? Has this travesty ended?
Stay tuned.
